HURRICANE MARIA MOVING SLOWLY TOWARD THE ISLANDS...

A HURRICANE WATCH IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR ANGUILLA. A HURRICANE WATCH MEANS THAT HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE POSSIBLE THE SPECIFIED AREA WITHIN 48 HOURS.

RESIDENTS SHOULD START TO IMPLEMENT THEIR HURRICANE DISASTER PLANS.

AT 500 AM AST (0900 UTC), THE CENTER OF HURRICANE MARIA WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 14.6 NORTH, LONGITUDE 59.5 WEST OR 295 MILES SE OF ANGUILLA. MARIA IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST NEAR 13 MPH (20 KM/H), AND THIS MOTION WITH A DECREASE IN FORWARD SPEED IS EXPECTED THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT.ON THE FORECAST TRACK, THE CENTER OF MARIA WILL MOVE ACROSS THE LEEWARD ISLANDS LATE TODAY AND TONIGHT AND THEN OVER THE EXTREME NORTHEASTERN CARIBBEAN SEA TUESDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHT.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 90 MPH (150 KM/H) WITH HIGHER GUSTS. SIGNIFICANT STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS, AND MARIA IS EXPECTED TO BECOME A DANGEROUS MAJOR HURRICANE BEFORE IT MOVES THROUGH THE LEEWARD ISLANDS.

HURRICANE-FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 15 MILES (30 KM) FROM THE CENTER AND TROPICAL-STORM-FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 105 MILES (165 KM).

THE ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 977 MB (28.85 INCHES).

BASED ON THE LAST ISSUED FORECAST TRACK, MARIA IS FORECAST TO PASS WITHIN 115 MILES OF THE ISLAND. THIS MEANS STORM-FORCE WINDS ARE LIKELY FOR THE ISLAND. THESE WINDS ARE LIKELY TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND CONTINUE UNTIL WEDNESDAY MORNING. AT THIS TIME, THERE IS A LOW CHANCE OF HURRICANE-FORCE WINDS.

SEAS WILL START TO DETERIORATE TONIGHT AND WILL LIKELY PEAK NEAR 6 METRES OR 20 FEET DURING THE PASSAGE OF THE STORM. ALSO, STORM-SURGE OF UP TO 6 FEET IS POSSIBLE. A HIGH SURF AND OTHER MARINE WARNINGS WILL GO INTO EFFECT TOMORROW. BEACH-GOERS SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THE BEACHES, AND MARINERS SHOULD SECURE THEIR VESSELS.

RAINFALL TOTALS OF 2 TO 6 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE DURING THE PASSAGE OF MARIA. HENCE, FLASH FLOODING IS LIKELY. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH WILL BE ISSUED SOME TIME TOMORROW. RESIDENTS LIVING IN LOW LYING AND FLOOD PRONE AREAS SHOULD PREPARE TO TAKE ACTIONS TO MITIGATE MODERATE TO MAJOR FLOODING.

RESIDENTS SHOULD START TO EXECUTE THEIR HURRICANE PLAN, FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BY OFFICIALS AND CONTINUE TO MONITOR MARIA CLOSELY.
