THIS IS FOR THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

A HURRICANE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS. A HURRICANE WARNING MEANS THAT HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR IS ALREADY HAPPENING WITHIN THE SPECIFIED AREA WITHIN 36 HOURS.

RESIDENTS SHOULD HAVE COMPLETED ALL DISASTER PREPARATIONS.

AT 1100 AM AST (1500 UTC), THE CENTER OF HURRICANE MARIA WAS LOCATED INLAND OVER PUERTO RICO NEAR LATITUDE 18.4 NORTH, LONGITUDE 66.5WEST OR ABOUT 123 MILES WEST-SOUTHWEST OF THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS. MARIA IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTHWEST NEAR 12 MPH (19 KM/H), AND THIS GENERAL MOTION WITH A GRADUAL DECREASE IN FORWARD SPEED IS EXPECTED THROUGH EARLY FRIDAY. ON THE FORECAST TRACK, THE CENTER OF MARIA WILL MOVE OFFSHORE OF THE NORTHERN COAST OF PUERTO RICO DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS. THE CENTER WILL THEN PASS OFFSHORE OF THE NORTHEASTERN COAST OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC TONIGHT AND THURSDAY AND THEN MOVE NEAR THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS AND SOUTHEASTERN BAHAMAS THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 140 MPH (220 KM/H) WITH HIGHERGUSTS. MARIA IS A CATEGORY 4 HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE WIND SCALE. LITTLE CHANGE IN STRENGTH IS FORECAST DURINGTHE NEXT 48 HOURS, AND MARIA IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN A DANGEROUS MAJOR HURRICANE THROUGH FRIDAY.

HURRICANE-FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 60 MILES (95 KM) FROM THE CENTER, AND TROPICAL-STORM-FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 150 MILES (240 KM).

THE ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 930 MB (27.47 INCHES).

BASED UPON THE LATEST OBSERVATION AND ANALYSIS, THE CENTER AND CORE OF HURRICANE MARIA IS MOVING TOWARD THE -NORTHWEST AND AWAY FROM THE AREA AND IS NOW LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 110 MILES WEST OF THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS. WHILE THIS POSITION PUTS THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS OUTSIDE THE ZONE OF SUSTAINED HURRICANE FORCE WINDS; TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS BETWEEN 40-70 MILES PER HOUR WITH HIGHER GUSTS POSSIBLY REACHING HURRICANE STRENGTH ARE POSSIBLE.

RESIDENTS OF THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS SHOULD CONTINUE TO TAKE ALL NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY.

RAINBANDS FROM MARIA COULD STILL PRODUCE RAINFALL TOTALS OF UP TO 5 INCHES OVER THE AREA . WITH THIS TYPE OF RAINFALL, RESIDENTS IN LOW LYING AND FLOOD PRONE AREAS SHOULD MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND AND RESIDENTS NEAR SLOPES SHOULD GUARD AGAINST MUDSLIDES.

LARGE SWELLS AND DANGEROUS BATTERING WAVES PEAKING TO NEAR 10 FEET WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE SEA CONDITIONS VERY DANGEROUS AND HAZARDOUS. MARINERS SHOULD HAVE COMPLETED SAFE ANCHORAGE AND SEA BATHERS SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THE BEACHES.

ALL RESIDENTS ARE URGED TO MONITOR THE MOVEMENT OF MARIA CLOSELY AND ACT TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY.

THE NEXT ADVISORY WILL BE AT 5PM ECT TODAY.
