PRECIPITATION

Rainfall across Antigua and Barbuda and indeed the rest of the Caribbean was above normal.  Across Antigua and Barbuda, the rainfall was some 24 % above the 45-year normal of 46 inches.  There was in effect no dry season as rain fell steadily from month to month.  In all 1251.1   millimeters or  49.26 inches were recorded at V.C Bird Int'l with a max 24-hour rainfall of  65.5 millimeters on the  19/11/2004, and a max 6-hour rainfall of  38.4  millimeters on  14/09/2004  at  18:00  .  Notably, only a small amount of rainfall was as a result of storms, which did not have any real effect on Antigua and Barbuda.  The maximum monthly rainfall occurred in October, 9.81 inches, with November and May contributing 7.42 inches each.  May, which in recent times failed to produce the significant rainfall for which it is known, was quite wet across the islands leading to flooding in  some areas.   The month of August was the notable dry month across the islands with 1.71 inches, down from an average of about 4 inches.

TEMPERATURE

The average monthly air temperature recorded at V.C Bird International Airport over the year 2004 was 26.5 °C  a little lower than last year with 26.9°C.  August was the warmest month of the year with an average temperature of 28.4°C. August predictably had the highest monthly average maximum temperature of 30.1°C  but the highest daily maximum temperature of 33.5° C occured on the 12th of  September 24th between 6 am and 2 pm.  January and February shared the coolest month of the year with average temperatures of  25.1° C and an average minimum temperature of 23.5° C.  The lowest minimum temperature 20.4° C occurred on 1st  January between midnight and 6am.  The warmest day i.e. the day with the highest daily average temperature 29.1°C occurred on August 20th, while the coolest day 23.1°C occurred on February 24th.

WIND

The average wind speed for the past year was 11.6 knots ,taken at a height of 10 meters ,with an average wind direction of 110° or East-South-Easterly. May was the month with the highest average monthly wind speed of 13.6 knots.  October, as it did last year, had the lowest average monthly wind speed 7.6 knots. The highest daily average wind speed  of 19.6 knots was recorded on March 2 nd and the lowest daily average wind speed of 1.1 knots was on November 13th. The highest hourly wind was 24 knots recorded on May 3rd at 8 pm.

AIR PRESSURE

The average sea level pressure recorded at V.C Bird International Airport over the past year was 1015.2 millibars, above the annual normal of 1014.6.  The highest monthly sea level pressure occurred in June at 1017.9 millibars, while the lowest monthly sea level pressure 1012.2 millibars was recorded in October; the same as last year .  The highest daily sea level pressure 1020.3 millibars was recorded on the 5th of March while the lowest 1006.9 millibars was recorded on 12th November.

CLOUD COVER

The average total cloud cover for the past year was 4.9 oktas (eights).  October had the highest average total cloud cover 5.8 oktas while January had the lowest with 3.8 oktas. The day with the highest total cloud cover was  May 20th with 7.8 oktas, while April 4th had the lowest with 2.0 oktas.  In terms of the lowest cloud total cover May had the highest, 4.6 while August had the lowest with 3.4 oktas.

HUMIDITY

The average relative humidity for the past year was 76.6 %  up from last year's 74.8 %(percent).  The highest average monthly relative humidity 82.7 % was observed in October while the lowest 70.6 % in April.   The hightest daily average 93.6 % occurred on the 10th of November while the lowest daily 59 % occurred on the 13th April.
