Antigua/Barbuda Weather Summary for Nov 2004

Monthly Normals | Summary Table | Graphs

The month of November again produced quite ample rainfall.  In all 188.4 millimetres or 7.42 inches of rainfall fell, well above the annual monthly average of 5.5 inches.  The maximum 24-hour rainfall 65.5 millimetres is the maximum for the year so far.  The most-humid day 93.6 %   for the year  so far occurred on the 10th.  Winds were mainly from the East at 9.4 knots.

The month began with the remnants of the persistent trough from October  interacting with a westwards moving. tropical wave.  This interaction resulted in cloudy spells with scattered shower activity across all the islands from Puerto Rico Southwards to Trinidad.  These led to some showers occurring across Antigua and Barbuda on the 1st and the 3rd diminishing on the 4th.  A high pressure ridge's dominance of the weather across the Eastern Caribbean was short-lived as a trough of low pressure brought cloudy conditions with showers and scattered thunderstorms across the Windward, Barbados and Trinidad/Tobago,  whixh subsequently spread further northwards,  bringing showers to Antigua and Barbuda and the other Leeward islands from the 6th.  Conditions continued much as before from the 8th but deteriorated further with the passage of westward moving tropical waves  just east of the Windward on the 8th and 10th.  The resulting interactions led to cloudy to overcast skies with occasionally heavy showers, causing flash flooding across the southern islands; some showers migrated Northwards, to Antigua and Barbuda and the other Leeward islands.  Conditions continued until the 14th producing some 104.1 millimetres or 4.14 inches with notable amounts occurring on the 1st -11.5 , 3rd -17.8 , 6th -23.8, 7th -21.0  and the 10th -17.4 millimetres.  Winds were variable on an average at 7.9 knots. Seas were mainly slight to moderate with swells 1.5-2.1 metres or 5 - 6 feet but occasionally locally rough prompting a small craft advisory.

A high pressure system dominated weather conditions across Antigua and Barbuda and most of the Eastern Caribbean from the 15th, leading to a more stable atmosphere up to the 18th.  However a lingering trough of low pressure, similar to what happened earlier in the month, enhanced a frontal trough also in the area, and this combination kept the atmosphere very moist and unstable. Cloudy to overcast skies with showers and isolated thunderstorms occurred across the Windward Islands then spread Northwards to Antigua and Barbuda and the other Leeward islands.  This brought the month's, and also the year's to date, maximum 24-hour rainfall of 65.5 millimetres.

The lingering trough of low pressure continued to dominate the weather conditions across the southern islands up to the 25th, with the occasional spread of conditions to the North, but a ridge of high pressure had begun to have an affect across Antigua and Barbuda and the other Northern islands from the 22nd.  Drier and more stable conditions prevailed up the end of the month, but patches of cloudiness and scattered showers continued to move across the islands from time to time in the Trade Wind flow.  These scattered showers 4.3 millimetres on the 26th and 8.9 millimetres on the 28th, resulted in significant end of month rainfall across the islands.  Winds from the 15th to the end of the month was mainly Easterly at 10.5 knots, with a 10-minute max of  20 knots recorded on the 20th at 06:00; also the time when the max-6 rainfall 33.4 millimetres was recorded.  Seas were mainly slight to moderate with swells 1.5-2.0 metres  or 5-6 feet.
