Antigua/Barbuda Weather Summary for June 2004

Monthly Normals | Summary Table | Graphs

For the second straight year, the month of June experienced rainfall above the monthly average across Antigua and Barbuda. The monthly rainfall was 67.9 millimeters or 2.67 inches with a 24-hr maximum of 26.0 millimeters occurring on the 30th, and a 6-hr maximum of 19.0 millimeters between midnight of the 30th and the morning. of the 1st July.  Rainfall occurred mainly from the 2nd to the 11th, then from the 23rd to the end of the month with mostly dry conditions between.   Winds were from the East South East at 13.5 knots with a max 10-minute wind of 20 knots occurring on the 26th at 8am.(see table below for details) .

The month began with a ridge of high pressure across the North East Caribbean  generating  partly cloudy skies with isolated brief showers across the islands. This continued until the 4th when the interaction of a  westward moving tropical wave, the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone and an upper level low resulted in scattered showers on the 5th and 6th The exodus of the tropical wave led to a ridge of high pressure stabilizing the atmosphere across the islands up to the 10th when cloudiness associated with a tropical wave over the Caribbean Sea  spread northwards across the islands moving patches of low level clouds and moisture across the islands up to the 11th.  Winds during this period were East South East at  14.4 knots.  Seas were at first slight to moderate but became moderate  to locally rough with waves 1.8-2.4m/6-8feet, with the passage of tropical waves that produced above normal seas and gusty winds. A small craft advisory was put into effect for afore mentioned conditions.

Drier conditions began settling across the islands from the 11th as tropical waves tended to stay further to the South, leaving a ridge of high pressure to dominate most of the North Eastern Caribbean skies.   An active tropical wave on the 17th generated cloudy to overcast skies with scattered showers and a few thunderstorms over the Windward, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago but these weather conditions, apart from a few scattered showers, failed  spread across the Northern islands up to the 22nd.   Winds were mainly from the South East at 12 knots  while seas moved from moderate to locally rough to slight to moderate swells 1.2-1.8m or 4-6ft. Small craft operators were asked to exercise caution.

A number of westward moving tropical waves approached the islands form the 23rd creating instability over the islands, and with the aid of a moderate wind flow across the islands resulting from a surface high pressure system, led to a mixture of periods of cloudiness with showers and dry stable days which persisted up to the to the end of the month. This period also produced 2.18 inches of rainfall which is more than 4/5's of the month's rainfall,  The most notable of the tropical waves caused an increase in cloudiness, instability and moisture across the islands leading to the month's wettest day on the 30th. Winds were from the  East South East at 14 knots.  Seas  were slight to moderate with waves 1.8m or 6ft. for most parts but occasionally moderate to locally rough.
