Antigua/Barbuda Weather Summary for
Jan 2004
Monthly Normals | Summary Table | Graphs
A high pressure system dominated the weather across Antigua and Barbuda for most of the month. This system, at first centered over the Bahamas, generated cool winds that moved over the Eastern Caribbean. These winds also drove some low level moisture across Antigua and Barbuda for most of the month, resulting in occasional cloudy skies with some sharp passing showers. These pockets of moisture resulted in most of the showers occurring up to the 17th , with the maximum 24-hour 7.6 millimeters and 6-hour 6.0 millimeters occurring on the 4th. Winds were mainly from the East at 16 knots up to the 7th. Seas were moderate to locally rough with waves up to 9 feet warranting a small craft advisory.
The high pressure system continued to dominate from the 8th to the 17th in very much the same way as before, with low level moisture producing occasional cloudy skies with showers. A trough of low pressure just east of the islands lingered westward, helping to reduce the surface winds and inducing a few showers across the islands. The maximum 24-hour 6.0 millimeters occurred on the 17th , while the maximum 6-hour 5.6 millimeters occurred on the 13th. Winds were form the East at 10 knots and seas were moderate to locally rough at first but reducing to slight to moderate by the 17th.
The remainder of the month was mostly fair with little shower activity. The high pressure system which had broadened causing the surface winds to weaken by the 17th, started to re-established itself by the 19th. Dry subsiding air was the major feature of this system although a few showers developed from westward moving moisture across the Atlantic, notably on the 27th and 29th. Winds were mainly from the East South East at about 11 knots with higher gusts at times. Seas became once again moderate to locally rough with swells up to 8 feet. A small craft advisory remained in effect up to the end of the month for above normal sea swells.
