Antigua/Barbuda Weather Summary for Feb 2004

Monthly Normals | Summary Table | Graphs

Partly cloudy conditions prevailed  for the month of February with occasional showers. These produced 2.96 inches which is above the average monthly rainfall of 1.57 inches.  The atmospheric pressure was above the monthly normal and the wind came mostly from the East by South at an average of 12.3 knots.  The average temperature and the average daily maximum were below normal while the average minimum temperature was above the climatic normal.

A broad high pressure ridge controlled the weather conditions across most of the Eastern Caribbean from the beginning of the month, bringing a fair amount of sunshine.  A few patches of cloudiness moving across the islands however, brought along brief cloudy spells and passing showers. These conditions continued until the 6th when the combination of moisture from the East moving over the islands and a weak dissipating front from the North, caused a few showers across the islands.  Winds were mainly from the East South East at 14 knots with a max of 24 knots on the 6th at 16:00 UTC. Seas were moderate to locally rough for most parts with waves up to 8 feet, prompting a small craft advisory for rough seas, wind gusts, squalls and low visibilities in showers.

A strong high pressure ridge began building across the islands from the 8th to the 19th, resulting in a brisk wind flow and mostly fair skies with occasional cloudy spells with brief scattered showers.  Winds were mainly from the East at 13.4 knots with a max of 24 knots at 05:00 UTC on the 10th.  Seas were mainly locally rough with swells up to 9 feet.  Small craft operators were advised to stay in port because of  dangerous sea conditions.

A combination of a weakening frontal trough, a trough across the Windward Islands and pockets of moisture moving west across the Atlantic, led to occasional showers across the islands from the 21st.  These showers resulted in the month’s maximum rainfall 37.5 millimeters on the 24th, and the wettest 6 –hour rainfall 20.5 on the 25th.  Winds were mainly from the South East and reduced to 9.5 knots while seas were slight to moderate with waves up to 6 feet.

Drier conditions returned to the islands from the 28th to the end of the month as a high pressure ridge continued to build, resulting in mostly fair skies with isolated showers.
