Antigua/Barbuda Weather Summary for
April 2004
Monthly Normals | Summary Table | Graphs
A weak high pressure system across the Northeast Caribbean kept weather conditions across Antigua and Barbuda dry and stable from the beginning of the month however a few brief scattered showers were evident on the 5th. A few cloudy spells with showers developed from the 8th as the dissipating tail-end of a frontal trough migrated Southeastwards across the islands, before drifting further to the South leaving clearer skies across Antigua and Barbuda. Winds were fairly light, coming mainly from the East South East at 8.8 knots while seas were slight to moderate with waves 1.5 meters or 5 feet.
Mostly fair conditions and light winds continued form the 11th as a surface low pressure trough continued to drift South Eastwards. Low level moisture maintained by this system led to a few brief passing showers . Skies remained mostly fair across the islands until the 16th when patches of low level moisture North Eastwards moved across the islands. These were due mainly to a mid-to-upper level trough over South America which led to the month's maximum daily rainfall 24.0 millimeters on the 17th. Winds during this period were mainly from the East at 10 knots while seas remained mainly slight to moderate with swells up to 1.8 meters or 6 feet and at times marginally safe for small craft operations.
The mid-to-upper level trough over South America continued to affect the weather across the islands from the 20th as moisture from the South continued to move North Eastwards across the Caribbean islands. This moisture resulted in a few showers occurring daily until the 27th when a high pressure system moved across the islands from the West. This system led to fairer skies but to quite a few brief scattered showers as surges of moisture move across the islands in a brisk wind flow associated with the high pressure system. Winds were mainly from the East South East at 14.5 knots resulting in the month's maximum 10-minute wind 22 knots on the 28th at 15:00 UTC. Seas became moderate to locally rough, as a result of the high pressure system, with waves 1.8-2.4meters or 6-8feet. A small craft advisory was put in effect for choppy seas and gusty winds.
